JOURNALIST: Nice to see you, good morning
EM: Nice to see you Guy.
JOURNALIST: Thanks for getting up early to come to see us – LME week has many evening events. We haven’t seen each other for a while. I am curious to take your take on how the story in Greece is developing.  I ve been watching the PMI data are still at a very low level, the manufacturing data that came out recently is still very week. What is your assessment of the picture?
EM: We met last January 15 in Athens if I remember well, right after the elections when I told you there is no Greek Drama Guy, the Greek drama is over and we move on. Unfortunately I was wrong; there was Greek Drama to come.

JOURNALIST: It certainly was.
EM: And I am afraid to say the first seven months of the Greek government had been a disaster. With the finance minister Varoufakis we went to a really bad negotiation with our partners

JOURNALIST: Right.
EM: After that, the new Tsipras government after the referendum and the election, we have had a much better government and these guys are trying much more than the previous ones to come to terms with the reality, what I call the realism of the new government. They are trying to abide by the new laws and regulations and agreements with our creditors. That’s where we are now. Ahead of us we have the 2nd review which is going to be difficult, including the labour laws, insurance and everything. Second, we have the reprofiling of the Greek debt which has been promised by the creditors and third we have ECB buying Greek sovereigns. Once we are through that Greek market, Greek economy will take off.

JOURNALIST: How is the banking system? The banking system is critical to that take of happening. We saw that banks shutter, we saw deposits fleeing. Give us your sense of what the banking system is in its current status it capable of delivering to fund that take off you are talking about?
EM: Capital controls are still in place; they are a little bit more loose but still in place therefore the supply of funding to the economy is still limited. Deposits are not yet returning to the banks and external funding is still difficult. Therefore we cannot expect a big jump in the GDP next year unless this funding issue is resolved. The funding issue is a matter of trust from abroad – to get trust from abroad we need reprofiling of the debt and QE, Greece to be included in the QE. When we have these two things, then IMF says we go next year for 2,8% but we are still not there yet.

JOURNALIST: Give us a sense of your own business – metals/appetite – do you see things pick up for you?
EM: As you seen in commodities, it’s been a relatively good year, a bad start and a good end, the dollar remained strong. China starts to do things. In our group which 85% export group we are not that much affected by the problems in the Greek economy. This year is going to be a good year and our plans show that 2017 is going to be another record year that could be accompanied by a total group restructuring which we announced two weeks ago and which now is full in place and ready to go.

JOURNALIST: Where are you exporting – where is demand improving/shrinking in Europe
EM: Demand in Europe is steady to positive especially in the northern parts of Europe. As far as our EPC projects are concerned, that s very active in the Middle East and now in the last couple of years very active in Africa, because of low energy prices and big energy need.

JOURNALIST: Oil – Are you skeptical about the oil price? How much do you see it helping or hinder your business?
EM: A potential OPEC agreement will definitely be positive for oil prices but we should never forget the swing factor whose name is American shale. If oil prices by OPEC agreement or anything else move towards 60s or 70s there is so much American shale production ready to come on stream. Already most competitive American producers have started production in the area of 50s which together with the contango gives them 2-3 years of life. So I am not very optimistic on oil prices in the near future. But I can tell you in the LME week, the dominant things were two – one was China and the other was the FED. No US presidential elections, very little Brexit – the two things were the American interest rates hikes and China

JOURNALIST: And what are they saying about the American interest rates hikes? They are expecting them to deliver in December or more next year?
EM: December is almost counted, it’s almost for sure and people start thinking about 2017. There may be one or two more hikes and that will shock the commodity industry which is related to the strength of the dollar as you can realize. And as far China is concerned, China for the first time ever this year made a move that surprised the market and changed the whole scene. To underline once more the importance of the Chinese market, they reduced the coal production by one third. By reducing the coal production, international coal prices were raised by a third. As a reflection steel prices were raised by a third and cost pressures on other metals including aluminum are tremendous. And we ve seen aluminum prices gone up by 300 dollars so that means that China is actually guiding the markets. Everybody looks at China and the FED.
