I was eager to talk to you to find out how your appointment with Vivian went and whether you talked to Christos about giving Julia the promotion so you can use her. But I want now to talk about your meeting with Simitis tomorrow, or rather, about the substance of your meeting. I want you first to get into an upbeat mood about the Foundation. Everyone I talk to about it, from Anna Lea to Bob Keeley, to Stanley, to the Iatridis's, to Amadeo and Eleni of Boston, to other Greeks, get very excited about it, and love its possibilities. Eleni helped with a conference in Cambridge some years ago called "The Greek Paradox." and translated the English book into Greek (not yet out), and I told her that was the kind of thing, among others, we wanted to do with the Idrima. You probably know about it. By the way, all these Boston guys know you and love you. They think of you as "something other," meaning out of this world. They feel happy about your involvement in the government and reassured about the future of Greece! My chest really bulges with pride. Back to the Idrima. I know we feel kind of shaky now without any resources. We also are still alone in the sense that we do not have a Board. Once we get that, we can rely on some additional help and thinking on fund raising. A good board will buoy up all our spirits. I believe must take a very clear stand on the nature of this Idrima, its non-party, more academic nature - and its international potential. Tell Simitis that a party activity like ISTAME, which is very similar to a Foundation, has, from an objective point of view the weaknesses of any party organization. It will get mixed up in the cliques, the ups and downs, and the fate of the party. It will not be able to do justice to the name of Papandreou - but it, of course, should exist. Don't be defensive about what we did. It was a coup, and a clever one. We will move forward gingerly, but surely. We will get funds for projects from various sources, and we will have to work for them. The Foundation will not blossom overnight. All of this takes energy, commitment, struggle, patience and WORK. Don't budge on this one, and don't compromise. We can't drop it because that would be harmful to your reputation. It would be judged that you couldn't stay in the kitchen, or that no one wanted to support it. The more and more I hear about your father, the more impressed I am as to the impact he made on this country and on its people. This is your legacy. Others would pee in their pants to have such as legacy. We finally came up with as good decision as to the Idrima in terms of its purpose and composition - NO party representatives. A good number of them will be pro-PASOK because they are the people who we will choose. But they will not be part stelehi. That will bring all the problems of PASOK right into our Board and activities. We will work together on projects if it suits us, or suits them - but we will decide on each project whether it is worth it. PASOK did not help with the exhibit - in fact they worked against it. We joined in on the Memorial Service and the Megaro Mousikis - and supported to our friends both activities which were PASOK organized. Our intentions are cooperative. Theirs are not. And would not be even with members on our Board - unless they controlled us. We learned this in EGE. They were hostile because they couldn't control But we worked hard and were effective. I believe I know Simitis pretty well because he was for a while the person on the ektelestiko committee in charge of the women's committee in PASOK - way back when. He will back down if he sees you are determined. Let him make suggestions, if you like, but do not consider them at the time, but say you will have to discuss it with the kids - and with the emerging board. You cannot make decisions on your own.
Don't forget also the York U. commitment. He should get out a letter immediately with that. soon we will lose the one million UOrk has committed if they do not hear from us. And don't forget to ask him to tell Venizelos to give us that building. It is shameful that they do not recognize Andreas's contribution with one building. I am going out to dinner with Nikos. Με πτώση της τάξης του 4% έκλεισαν τα ευρωπαϊκα χρηματιστήρια με αιχμή της πτώσης τις μετοχές του τραπεζικού κλάδου και της ενέργειας, καθώς οι επενδυτές πρόσθεσαν στις ανησυχίες τους την αβεβαιότητα στις αναδυόμενες αγορές και τη μειωμένη ζήτηση εμπορευμάτων.
Μεγάλη πτώση και στην Αθήνα (-5,28%). Συνεχίζεται η πτώση στη Γουόλ Στριτ, επηρεασμένη από τη δημοσίευση των αποτελεσμάτων τριμήνου αρκετών εταιρειών που δείχνουν μείωση των κερδών. για το σκάνδαλο της Μονής Βατοπεδίου. Ετσι η συνεδρίαση θα ξεκινήσει κανονικά στις 10 το πρωί και στις 6 το απόγευμα θα γίνει η μυστική ψηφοφορία. Ολοι παίρνουν ήδη θέσεις μάχης.
